The approach to surgical delivery differs from country to country. For example, in the US a C-section may be performed at a woman's request, though the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that the doctor be heavily involved in making the decision. The surgery is performed either under general anesthesia or using epidural anesthesia, which allows the woman to be conscious at the moment the baby is born. C-sections are often performed on women who previously traditionally gave birth and had complications.
