How to Store Medications Correctly

With improper storage, medications lose their properties. While you can still take the medication you do not get the desired therapeutic effect and you can even seriously harm yourself.

General guidelines

If the instructions say that the medication should be stored at room temperature, it means from 59-77 °F, in a cool place from 46-59 °F, and in a cold place from 35-46 °F (in the refrigerator). Storage in a dark place means protection of the medication from daylight. A dry place implies a relative humidity of no more than 60 %. Do not keep the medication in the bathroom. Exposure to high temperatures and moisture can not only reduce their effectiveness but also make them dangerous. Most suppositories, solutions for injection, eye drops, and liquid ointments are stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 35-46 °F, to avoid freezing.
